Tips snorkeling with whale sharks
- Gear check. Mask that doesn’t leak, snorkel you can clear easily, and fins you’re comfortable with. Avoid flashy gear that can spook animals.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen—or none at all. Better yet: wear a rash guard.
- Watch your surroundings. Boats, currents, and other snorkelers.
- Listen to your guide. They’re reading the animal’s behavior and the conditions.
- Let the whale shark lead. Never block its path or swim directly at it. Approach slowly from the side.
- Keep your distance. No touching—this removes their protective mucus layer and stresses them out.
- Mind the tail. It’s powerful and unpredictable; stay well clear.
- Slow movements only. Gentle fin kicks, no splashing, no diving down toward the animal.
- Stay calm and horizontal. Floating smoothly is less threatening
Getting in & out safely from the boat! (tour whale shark)
How to stay steady:
- Put fins on in the water, not on the boat.
- Hold the side of the boat & sliding in
- Use the ladder or engine side (ask the captain).
Back to the boat safely:
- Remove fins in the water.
- Hand them to the crew.
- Climb slowly using both hands.
